Choosing who to journey with as you put the pieces together in your story is an important and intensely personal decision. I believe it is important you know what I have to offer you. I possess a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and am a registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (# 12570).
Beyond this specific training, the diversity of my personal and work history allows me insight into a range of realities. I was a teacher for 15 years and always had a passion for supporting families facing unique challenges. As a mother of four and parent educator, I appreciate the joys and challenges of family life. Living internationally made me sensitive to cultural diversity and relocation issues. As a frontline support worker and counsellor for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, I am attuned to the residual impact of abuse and post-traumatic stress and attest to the power of resilience and potential for post-traumatic growth. Each part of my journey has formed me as an individual and as a therapist. |
My eclectic approach to counselling is client centered and responsive to the individual needs and desires of each person I journey alongside. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a key piece of my work, as I believe strongly that our bodies hold memories and wisdom beyond what we can explicitly know or verbalize. I also understand the impact of intergenerational trauma in the here and now. I lean towards a psychodynamic orientation while incorporating components of family systems and narrative approaches. I use a range of methods to resolve the impact of trauma, including Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) and guided visualization models. I see tremendous value in each of approaches I offer and work with clients to discern which model is best fit for them.
I consider it a great honor to be invited as witness to your healing journey and no two cases will be explored in an identical fashion due to the unique story, readiness and motivation of each client. It is my opinion we each possess the answers we seek and the purpose of counselling is to tap into the truths of our own stories so we can start to live authentic lives unhindered by the power of destructive emotions, dysfunctional beliefs, negative self-talk and self-defeating habits.
Above and beyond all techniques and approaches, the most important element of counselling is the rapport between counsellor and client. I know how scary it is to consider sharing a story with someone new. For this reason, I offer an initial 30 minute introductory meeting at no cost to ensure there is a good fit between your needs and what I offer.
